WeChat Just Banned Traffic Diversion. What This Means for Your Brand Account

If you have been using QR codes, hidden links, or multi-step redirects to move WeChat followers to an external page, I have some news for you. WeChat just made all of that against the rules.

The platform published new guidelines targeting 导流, which translates roughly as “traffic diversion.” The message is simple: keep your audience inside WeChat. If you try to export them, expect consequences.

Here is what the new rules actually say, what you can still do, and how to adapt your strategy.

What is 导流 and why WeChat banned it

For years, brands and content creators built WeChat audiences and then immediately tried to move them somewhere else. Drop a QR code in the article. Add a phone number in the description. Link to an external Taobao page. Send followers to a personal WeChat account for “exclusive deals.”

WeChat’s position is clear: this is bad for users. When someone follows a WeChat account, they expect content. Not a funnel to another platform. The new guidelines say that diversion “affects users’ access to complete information and may create uncontrollable risks like fraud.”

There is also a business reason. Every user who leaves WeChat is a user WeChat cannot monetize. The platform wants transactions to happen inside its own ecosystem, not on Taobao or a brand’s standalone website.

WeChat marketing guide 2026

The three things you cannot do anymore

WeChat defined three categories of prohibited behavior:

Content diversion. Publishing incomplete content with a QR code or external link that says “scan here to read the full article.” The content has to exist inside WeChat. You cannot publish a teaser and redirect people elsewhere for the rest.

Interactive diversion. Embedding WeChat IDs, QR codes, or external links in your account description, in auto-replies, in comment sections, or in direct messages. If users contact you through the official account, you cannot redirect them to another account or platform in your response.

Nested diversion. Multi-step redirect chains designed to look organic. Account A sends followers to Account B, Account B sends them to a Taobao store. WeChat is specifically watching for these sequences because they were built to evade detection. (It did not work.)

The penalty structure shifted too. Before, WeChat acted after violations. Now, the platform sends proactive warnings through “account health reports.” You get flagged before content is removed. Act on it.

The part people miss: your existing followers are fine

The diversion ban applies to recommendation traffic, not to direct subscribers. Followers who already subscribed to your account can still access your content normally. WeChat will not suppress posts for your existing audience.

What changes is discovery. Content that violates the new rules gets pulled from WeChat’s recommendation feeds. New users searching for content will not find yours. That is where the real damage is for growth-stage accounts.

What you can still do

WeChat did not ban commerce or cross-channel activity. It banned specific tactics for extracting users from the platform. Here is what still works:

Mini-programs as the bridge. Instead of linking to an external Taobao page, build a WeChat mini-program for your store. Mini-programs live inside WeChat. The user never leaves. Transactions, loyalty programs, product catalogs, support — all of it can run inside the WeChat ecosystem via a mini-program. This is the recommended path WeChat itself suggests.

WeChat Shop. For brands selling products, migrate your transaction layer to WeChat Shop. Users can browse and buy without leaving the app. This is exactly what WeChat wants, and it performs well for brands that invest in it.

Video accounts for discovery. WeChat’s Video Account format is actively promoted in the recommendation algorithm. Short video content, live streams, and product showcases in Video Account format get broad organic distribution. It keeps users inside the WeChat world and grows your subscriber base at the same time.

Complete content, always. Publish full articles inside WeChat. Do not cut them short to force clicks. The algorithm rewards completion rate and saves. A full article that users read to the end performs better than a teaser that drives external traffic.

WeChat Moments advertising strategy

What this means for your WeChat strategy

If your WeChat account was primarily a traffic pump sending users to Taobao or your website, the model is broken. That is a hard thing to hear, but it is better to know now than to watch your account get penalized.

The brands that will win on WeChat in 2026 are the ones building self-contained value inside the platform. Content that is complete and useful. Commerce that lives in mini-programs. Customer relationships managed through Enterprise WeChat rather than personal accounts.

WeChat is not just a traffic channel. It never was, but many brands treated it that way. The platform is now enforcing its actual model: a closed ecosystem where value is created and transacted inside its walls. China’s digital market runs on super-apps, and WeChat is the oldest and largest of them. Working with that, not against it, is the strategic adjustment this rule change demands.

Three things to do this week

First, run an audit of your official account. Check the account description, auto-reply messages, and recent posts for any QR codes, external links, or WeChat ID mentions. Remove them. Use the account health report tool WeChat provides to check your status.

Second, if you do not have a mini-program, build one. Even a basic product catalog mini-program keeps transactions inside WeChat and gives you a compliant path to conversion. A mini-program also lets you run WeChat ads with direct purchase outcomes.

Third, invest in Video Account content. Short educational videos, product demonstrations, behind-the-scenes brand content. Video Account is WeChat’s growth format right now. It distributes to non-subscribers and feeds new followers into your official account organically.
