When a Chinese consumer types “which French skincare brand is good for sensitive skin?” into DeepSeek or Doubao, they do not get a list of links. They get one answer. With brand names inside it.
If your brand is not in that answer, you do not exist for that consumer at that moment.
This is Generative Engine Optimization, GEO. And it is changing how brand visibility works in China right now.

What GEO means
Traditional SEO gets your content to rank in search results. The user clicks a link. Traffic goes to your website.
GEO works at an earlier level. AI assistants like DeepSeek, Doubao, Baidu AI Mode, and Tencent Yuanbao answer questions directly. No links. No clicks. The user reads the AI response and either remembers your brand or not.
Your job in GEO is to become the source that AI models cite when they build those answers.
China GEO is different from Western GEO. In Europe or the US, you optimize your website so ChatGPT or Perplexity cites you. In China, your website does not help. Chinese AI models draw from a completely different set of sources. This is connected to a broader shift in how brands need to think about SEO in China. GEO is the next layer on top of it.
The platform problem
Chinese AI models consistently ignore official brand websites and pull from third-party platforms instead.
Luo Xiaojun from Mmimc said it clearly in Yicai Global: “AI chatbots tend to ignore official brand content and instead draw information from third-party platforms, even though these sites are not always neutral.”
The platforms that matter most are:
- Zhihu: China’s main Q&A platform. Structured question-answer format is exactly what LLMs are trained on. Brands with a Zhihu presence get cited regularly.
- Baidu Baike: China’s Wikipedia. A well-maintained Baike entry is one of the first things AI models reference for basic brand facts.
- WeChat public accounts: Baidu cannot index WeChat content. But Tencent’s own AI assistant, Yuanbao, has exclusive access to WeChat. So Yuanbao cites WeChat articles. Other models do not.
A standalone corporate website, even with ICP license and full Chinese localization, performs poorly as an AI citation source. Models do not trust self-promotional sources.
The AI engines you are targeting
Doubao (ByteDance): the most used AI assistant in China. Integrated into the Douyin ecosystem. Strong user base among younger consumers. Draws from ByteDance content, including Toutiao articles.
DeepSeek: launched January 2025, became a reference for cost-efficient AI performance. Favors structured, formal Chinese-language content.
Baidu ERNIE / AI Mode: Baidu now shows an AI-generated answer at the top of search results before links. It weights Baidu Baike, Baidu Tieba, and Baidu-indexed news sources above foreign-origin content. Read our guide on Baidu SEO to understand the foundation.
Tencent Yuanbao: the only AI with access to WeChat’s ecosystem. If you publish regularly on a WeChat Official Account, Yuanbao can cite your articles.
There is no single GEO strategy. You need presence across all of them.

What happens when you ignore GEO
A European brand enters China. They build a clean localized website. They run Baidu PPC ads. They translate product pages.
A potential buyer searches the brand on DeepSeek. The AI finds one Zhihu thread from three years ago where someone asked “is this brand reliable in China?” and the top answer says distribution is slow and after-sales is bad.
The brand had no Zhihu presence. No verified answers. The AI cited the only source it could find. That is the GEO failure. You cede control of your brand story to whatever is already out there.
What to do
Build a Zhihu brand presence. Create a verified account. Find the top 20-30 questions in your category. Answer them with long, structured, product-relevant content. Read our Zhihu marketing guide to get started. Zhihu is cited by most Chinese LLMs and indexed by Baidu.
Claim your Baidu Baike entry. If it does not exist, create it. If someone else created it, claim it through Baidu’s official process. Make sure the brand name, founding date, product categories, and country of origin are accurate and consistent everywhere.
Publish on WeChat Official Account. Focus on articles that answer specific questions, not press releases. Product guides, market comparisons, usage tips. This is primarily for Yuanbao, but well-structured articles get shared and amplified.
Keep entity data consistent. Your brand name must be spelled identically across Baike, Zhihu, WeChat, and any Douyin content. Product names must match everywhere. If you have a Chinese brand name, use it consistently across all platforms.
Seed third-party content. KOC reviews on Xiaohongshu, user threads on Zhihu, editorial mentions in outlets like 36Kr or Jiemian all build AI citation signals. The goal is for multiple independent sources to mention your brand in the same context. For data on AI search trends in China, refer to this iiMedia AI market report (Chinese).
The honest picture
GEO in China is real and accelerating. But the data is still thin. Published statistics on AI adoption rates and GEO market sizes come mostly from commercial research firms. Specific numbers should be treated as directional.
What is clear from every practitioner in this space: the brands building platform-native content on Zhihu, Baidu Baike, and WeChat now will have a structural advantage in China’s AI search environment. That advantage will get harder and more expensive to close as the market matures.
