Douyin Traffic Diversion Rules 2026: Harsher Penalties for Sellers

Douyin has run out of patience with livestreamers who send viewers somewhere else. Since July 2026, merchant media in China report a much harsher penalty ladder for off-platform traffic diversion during a live session. Say “add me on WeChat”, flash a WhatsApp number or push a website link on screen, and you put your whole Douyin sales channel at risk.

I have been in Shanghai for more than 15 years. I have seen every platform do this dance. This time the message is very clear, and foreign brands need to hear it.

What Douyin changed

According to rules summarized by Chinese merchant media such as 大数跨境 (10100.com) and first reported on Sohu, the penalty ladder now looks like this:

  • First offense: the account’s product showcase (橱窗) is closed for 7 days. No selling, no product links.
  • Second offense: selling rights are removed for good, and pending commissions plus the merchant deposit are frozen.

What counts as diversion? Pretty much anything that moves the buyer out of Douyin. A WeChat ID in the live chat. A QR code on the background banner. A host saying “private message me for the price”. Coded spellings like “V信” or “薇信” do not fool the system any more. The same sources say account bios, usernames, avatars and video backgrounds are all monitored, not only what the host says.

Douyin already cut reach and suspended streams for this behavior. The new part is the money. Freezing commissions and deposits turns a compliance issue into a cash flow issue.

My reading: Douyin wants the full transaction, and the data

Let’s be honest about why this happens. Douyin is not protecting consumers first. It is protecting its GMV, its ad revenue and its customer data.

Every buyer who leaves the live room to pay on WeChat is a buyer Douyin cannot retarget, cannot count and cannot charge a commission on. For years, many sellers played the game: build traffic on Douyin, close the deal in a WeChat group. The platform tolerated it while it was growing. Now it is mature, and it wants the closed loop that Taobao and JD have had for a decade.

It also fits the wider push for cleaner livestream commerce in China. Regulators are tightening rules on what hosts can claim, and I wrote about this in our piece on the new livestream advertising law. Platforms prefer to police themselves hard before the state does it for them.

My position: this is not a temporary crackdown. Brands that still treat Douyin as a lead source for WeChat are on borrowed time.

What this changes for your brand

I see three types of foreign brands hit by this.

1. The “lead gen” brands. B2B companies, education providers, real estate and travel agencies often use Douyin live to collect contacts. A European language school we work with used to end every live with its WeChat QR code. That habit is now the fastest way to lose the account.

2. The distributor-driven brands. Many foreign food and wine brands sell through Chinese distributors who run their own lives. You do not control what the host says. But if your brand name sits on a banned showcase, you pay the reputational price. Check your distributor contracts.

3. The cross-border brands with an overseas shop. Pushing Chinese viewers to your .com site or a WhatsApp number during a live is exactly what the rule targets.

The good news? Brands that sell properly inside Douyin now face less unfair competition from hosts who were dodging commissions.

How to adapt, in practice

  • Audit your lives and your accounts. Bio, avatar, background banner, pinned comments, scripts. Remove every external contact.
  • Open a Douyin store (抖店) or a cross-border store. Close the sale on the platform. Yes, you pay the commission. It is the cost of the traffic.
  • Use Douyin’s own tools for leads. Service businesses can use official lead forms and Douyin customer service instead of a WeChat ID.
  • Brief your hosts and distributors in writing. One slip from a freelance host can cost your showcase.
  • Build private traffic on WeChat separately. WeChat Channels, your Official Account and mini program are your own space. Keep the two worlds apart.

If you are still planning your Douyin set-up, start with our guide to Douyin e-commerce and our overview of Douyin marketing for international brands. For the official wording of merchant rules, the Douyin e-commerce learning center is the reference.

The bottom line

Douyin traffic is rented, not owned. It always was. The new sanctions just put a price on forgetting it. Sell inside the platform, build loyalty on WeChat with its own content, and never mix the two in the same live room.

At GMA, we run Douyin stores and lives for foreign brands with compliance built into the scripts. If you want a quick check of your current account, our team can review it.

Your turn: is Douyin right to lock buyers in, or is it pushing brands back toward WeChat Channels, where private traffic is still part of the model?
