Douyin Store: How we Do Douyin E-Commerce in 2026

I now recommend almost all our customers to open a Douyin Store.

TikTok is well known worldwide now, and its Chinese counterpart, Douyin, is China’s number one short video app. It pushed hard into e-commerce over the past few years, and by 2026 a Douyin Store is no longer an experiment. For most brands we work with, it is close to a default move.

This presents a real opportunity to reach and sell to Chinese consumers where they already spend hours a day.

At our agency, we’ve helped dozens of international brands launch their Douyin Stores and connect with Chinese consumers, from the first product listing to the first six figure GMV month.

In this article, you’ll learn how Douyin e-commerce actually works in 2026, why it matters, and how to set up and grow your own Douyin Store.

I lead e-commerce launches at our agency, and Douyin stores are where most of our 2026 China projects start. What follows comes from actual store builds, not from a slide deck.

Quick Summary

  • Douyin Passed 1 Billion Monthly Users in 2026: Douyin crossed 1 billion monthly active users in March 2026, the first short video app in China to do so, and it now behaves as much like a search engine and marketplace as a content feed.
  • Flagship Stores Since 2021: Launched in March 2021, Douyin’s flagship stores blend physical and digital experiences and have attracted hundreds of brands, including Huawei, Winona, and Perfect Diary.
  • GMV Growth in 2026: Douyin e-commerce reached roughly RMB 3.42 trillion in GMV in 2024, overtaking JD.com, and its May 2026 report shows livestreams still driving 63% of sales while search and store front purchases grow even faster.
  • Advantages Over Other Platforms: Douyin stands out through higher user engagement, personalized content, a strong social layer, and a lower cost of entry than legacy platforms like Tmall.
  • Setting Up a Flagship Store: Establishing a store on Douyin means creating a brand profile, setting up a product catalog, and finalizing payment settings. The platform supports both physical and digital products and several payment methods.
  • Marketing Strategies for Success: Selling well on Douyin means working with creators, especially small ones (KOCs) paid on affiliate commission, using hashtags, running seasonal promotions, and keeping the catalog current.
  • Cost of Opening a Flagship Store: There’s no fixed price, but expect a deposit ranging from 100,000 to 400,000 RMB depending on product category, plus a technical service fee that varies by category.

Introduction to Douyin Flagship Stores

To capitalize on Douyin’s popularity, ByteDance opened flagship stores for the app. This feature was launched in March 2021 and includes a campaign banner, vouchers, and various marketing activities.

Flagship stores are designed to let users experience a brand in a mixed physical and digital space. Shoppers interact with the app on devices set up in store, and take part in activities organized by Douyin. It gives brands and merchants real product exposure and a chance to sell directly on the platform.

Several hundred firms, including foreign brands, opened flagship stores once the service launched, among them Huawei, Winona, Peacebird, and Perfect Diary. That first wave is now years behind us, and the platform has only gotten bigger since.

Douyin E-Commerce by the Numbers in 2026

The scale changed fast. Douyin’s e-commerce business reached roughly RMB 3.42 trillion in GMV in 2024, overtaking JD.com in transaction volume for the first time. Growth has slowed from the platform’s early hypergrowth years, but it is still outpacing almost every other channel in China.

What matters more for a foreign brand is how that GMV gets built. Between August 2024 and August 2025, transaction volume from Douyin’s “shelf” scenario, meaning the search bar and the store page rather than the main video feed, grew 49% year on year. People are starting to search Douyin the way they search Taobao, not just scroll it. A store that relies only on viral videos is leaving that traffic on the table.

Livestream still does most of the heavy lifting though. In its May 2026 domestic brand report, Douyin said livestream rooms accounted for 63% of total GMV, newly active brand merchants grew 47% year on year, and more than 10,000 brands crossed RMB 1 million in annual store GMV, with over 2,000 crossing RMB 100 million. AI home appliances and 3C electronics were the fastest growing categories, up 73% and 49% year on year.

One more shift worth flagging: Douyin passed 1 billion monthly active users in March 2026, the first short video app in China to cross that line. Reach is not the constraint anymore. Getting found, and getting picked over the next 200 sellers in the same category, is.

Being found inside Douyin’s own search bar is its own discipline now, separate from ads and separate from going viral. We cover how ranking actually works on the platform in our Douyin SEO guide, worth a read once your store is live.

Advantages of Douyin Over Other E-commerce Platforms in China

Douyin is still built as a short video app first, and that’s exactly what makes it different as a sales channel. Average session time is well over an hour, against a few minutes on most other apps. Users aren’t just browsing, they’re staying.

Douyin: Douyin statistics and key info

Compared with other big e-commerce platforms in China, Douyin has a few clear advantages:

  1. Higher engagement. Users spend far more time per session than on Tmall or JD, so a product gets more chances to be seen before it’s bought.
  2. A social layer that sells. People follow creators and brands, see what others are buying, and act on it. That’s closer to word of mouth than to a catalog page.
  3. Content does the convincing before the click. A shopper lands on a product page already half sold by the video that led them there, which tends to lift conversion versus a cold search result.
  4. Lower entry cost than legacy platforms. Douyin doesn’t demand the same paid traffic budget Tmall requires just to be seen, which matters for a brand testing China for the first time.
  5. Scale and reach. Over a billion monthly users means most consumer segments show up somewhere in the data, from tier 1 city shoppers to lower tier towns that legacy e-commerce still underserves.

How Do You Go About Establishing Your Flagship Store on Douyin?

Douyin, China’s leading short video app, gives brands a real shot at reaching consumers through its eCommerce platform. If you’re looking to set up shop, or you’re just curious how it works, here’s a breakdown of the process.

There are three main steps: creating a brand profile, setting up your product catalog, and finalizing your payment settings.

Creating a Brand Profile

The first step is to create a brand profile. This means providing basic information about your business, such as its name, contact details, and website. You’ll also need a logo and a category for your store.

Setting Up Your Product Catalog

Once your brand profile is live, you can start adding products to your catalog. Douyin allows both physical and digital products, so you can list clothes, accessories, home goods, or software. You’ll need photos, descriptions, and prices for each product, plus shipping methods and delivery times.

Finalizing Your Payment Settings

The final step is setting up payments. Douyin accepts a range of methods, including credit cards, Alipay, and WeChat Pay. You’ll need to specify which methods you’re using and the corresponding currencies.

Once your store is set up, you’ll need marketing materials to promote it. Douyin provides templates and tools to help build ads and videos.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, here’s what actually works once the store is live.

Tips for Selling on Douyin

Make use of influencers

One of the best ways to promote your Douyin store is to work with influencers. They help you reach a wider audience and move product faster than paid ads alone.

Use creative marketing materials

Douyin gives you templates and tools to build ads and videos that actually catch attention. Paid promotion runs mainly through Qianchuan for store traffic and Star Map for creator partnerships, and getting the split right between the two matters more than the total budget. We go into the account setup and budget allocation in our Douyin advertising guide.

Brands can even build custom stickers that spread the same way hashtags do.

Offer discounts and promotions

Discounts and promotions are a solid way to boost sales and attract attention to your store. Offer real deals on key products to pull in first time buyers.

Chinese shopping festivals matter here because they reach a huge number of consumers who are already primed to buy during those windows.

Singles’ Day, on November 11th, is still the biggest one. In 2025 it generated close to RMB 1.7 trillion across platforms, up 14.2% year on year, and it now runs as a 37 day window rather than a single day. Douyin’s share of that spend is smaller than Tmall’s, but it’s growing the fastest of any platform. We break down what actually sold in our 11.11 shopping festival roundup.

So if you’re a brand looking to sell in China, building around one of the country’s major shopping festivals is still one of the fastest ways to get in front of buyers who are already spending.

Use Hashtags

Hashtags increase the visibility of your posts, which helps more people discover your products. Relevant, popular hashtags give you a better shot at reaching buyers who are actually interested in what you sell.

Create brand hashtags and build a community around them. The more they get reused by others, the better.

Keep your store updated

Keep your product catalog current. It’s a small thing, but customers notice when a store looks stale, and Douyin’s own ranking logic notices too.

Selling on Douyin is a fairly straightforward process on paper. What separates the stores that work from the ones that don’t is usually smaller than people expect. Here’s one example.

What Actually Moved the Needle: A Client Example

Nora runs a Norwegian skincare brand that opened a Douyin Store in early 2025, mostly to have a presence on the platform. Six months in, the store had barely 400 orders and a conversion rate under 0.5%, well below what a livestream-driven category like skincare should get.

The first fix she tried was more paid traffic to the store page, using straight product photos lifted from her Shopify listings. Sales barely moved. The photos looked foreign, literally: shot for a European audience, in European light, with packaging in English only.

What worked instead was rebuilding the store around short clips pulled from her own livestreams instead of static photos, adding a Mandarin ingredient explainer to every product page, and routing part of the ad budget into a handful of Chinese KOCs who used the cream on camera instead of reading a script. The reason it worked is simple: on Douyin, a product page gets judged the same way a video does, on whether it looks native and whether someone real vouches for it. A translated Shopify listing fails that test even with a decent budget behind it.

Within four months, conversion on the store page rose to 2.1%, and monthly GMV went from roughly RMB 18,000 to RMB 96,000. Not a viral spike. A store that finally converted the traffic it was already getting.

How Much Does It Cost To Open a Flagship Store on Douyin?

There’s no set cost to open a flagship store on Douyin, since it depends on your business. But there are fixed initial costs to plan for: brand profile creation, product catalog setup, and marketing spend on top.

Overall, opening a Douyin store is still relatively cheap compared with legacy platforms, which is part of why it’s a good entry point for a brand that hasn’t sold in China before.

Deposit

  • Most categories require a deposit of 100,000 RMB.
  • Deposit of 200,000 RMB for nutrition and health supplements, infant milk and formula.
  • Deposit of 400,000 RMB for bird’s nest products.

Technical Service Fee

This fee varies by product category.

For example, the fee for beauty products is around 4% of the product’s price, while fashion accessories sit closer to 5%.

The Douyin Playbook Has Moved On

A few things that barely existed when most Douyin Store guides were written are now standard practice.

KOC networks instead of one big influencer

Brands used to chase a single large KOL for one splashy campaign. In 2026, most of the budget goes to Key Opinion Consumers instead: dozens of small creators with a few thousand to a few hundred thousand followers, paid partly on affiliate commission through Douyin’s own affiliate network. Each video costs little, most underperform, but enough compound that the store gets a steady stream of native looking content instead of one expensive spike.

AI hosts for the hours a human can’t cover

Digital human livestreaming, an AI-generated host reading a script around the clock, moved from novelty to a normal part of the schedule for standard, lower consideration products. China introduced a rule in 2025 requiring a visible “AI” watermark on these streams. It hasn’t slowed adoption. If anything, it made viewers more comfortable, since they now know what they’re watching. We walk through the setup and the legal side in our guide to AI digital human streaming. Keep a human host for launches and storytelling, and let an AI host cover the slow afternoon hours.

Budget is shifting away from Tmall, toward Douyin

Tmall traffic is almost entirely paid at this point, bought through Alibaba’s ad platform, and it gets more expensive every year for a mid-size brand with no existing following. That’s one of the reasons we’re seeing brands move new budget toward Douyin Shop instead, where organic reach through content still counts for something. We cover that shift in more detail in Why Brands Are Leaving Tmall for Douyin.

How Douyin Fits Into a Brand’s Wider China Strategy

Douyin, known as TikTok outside China, went from a small entertainment app to a platform businesses use to advertise and sell at real scale. The interface is simple enough that a brand with no China team can get a store live within a week, and the targeting is granular enough to reach a specific demographic without wasting budget on the rest.

What’s changed since the app first launched flagship stores is the audience itself. It’s no longer mostly younger, lower tier city users looking for entertainment. Tier 1 shoppers, older buyers, and higher spending categories like skincare and home appliances now show up in the numbers too, which is part of why GMV keeps climbing even as user growth slows.

FAQ: Opening a Douyin Store

How long before a Douyin Store generates real sales?

Most stores we launch see their first orders within two to four weeks of going live, but a meaningful, repeatable sales volume usually takes two to three months. That timeline depends heavily on whether you already have creators or livestream partners lined up before launch, or whether you’re starting from zero on the content side too.

Do I need a Chinese business license to open a Douyin Store?

Not always. Douyin accepts verification through a translated non-Chinese business license for many categories, which is how most of the foreign brands we work with get started. Regulated categories like food, supplements, and infant products require additional certification, and it’s worth checking category rules before you commit to a launch date.

Is a Douyin Store worth it if I can’t commit to regular livestreaming?

Yes, but expect a smaller share of the pie. Livestream still drives 63% of GMV on the platform, so a store without it will lean harder on search traffic, hashtags, and short video content instead. That’s a real path, just a slower one, and it works best for categories people actively search for rather than impulse buys.

What’s the difference between a Douyin Store and running Douyin ads?

A Douyin Store is where the product lives, catalog, pricing, and checkout. Ads are how you get traffic to it. You can technically run ads without a store, sending traffic elsewhere, but most brands selling in China get more value from a store because it captures both content-driven impulse buys and search traffic in one place.

Want to Launch Your Own Douyin Flagship Store?

With the rise of social e-commerce in China, Douyin has invested heavily in shopping features for its users. E-commerce puts the platform’s strong engagement to work and turns it into revenue, and it’s a solid way for brands to add a complementary sales channel.

We launch and manage Douyin Flagship Stores for brands who don’t have the time or the local team to do it themselves, from account setup and catalog build to the KOC and livestream partnerships that actually move the sales needle. We also track performance data on an ongoing basis so budget moves toward what’s working, not what launched first.
