Double 11 2026: Tmall Drops Basket Rules, What Brands Must Do Now

Tmall has published its Double 11 2026 calendar, and it starts earlier than many foreign brands planned. Pre-sale deposits open on October 15. Final payments and spot sales start on October 20 at 8 pm. The festival then runs until November 13 at midnight. That is about 25 days of selling, not one day.

The details were first reported by Huxiu. I have been in Shanghai for more than 15 years, and I can tell you one thing: if your campaign is not locked by early October, you are already late.

What Tmall announced for Double 11 2026

  • October 15: pre-sale opens, consumers pay a deposit.
  • October 20, 8 pm: final payment and spot sales begin.
  • November 13, 23:59: end of the event.
  • New mechanism: “official instant discount” (官方立减). A shopper buying a single item gets the discount directly. No need to fill a basket to reach a threshold (无需凑单).

The last point is the real news. For years, Double 11 meant complex rules: spend 300 RMB, get 50 RMB off, stack coupons, calculate for an hour. Chinese consumers hated it. Tmall now drops that logic for a simple price cut on the product page.

There is also an international side. According to Guandian, Taobao will launch Double 11 at the same time in 20 overseas markets, more than 1.2 million Taobao and Tmall merchants take part in selling abroad, and over 90% of medium and large items will ship directly overseas. Read this correctly: this is Chinese sellers going out, not foreign brands coming in. It tells you where Alibaba puts its energy in 2026.

My reading: simpler rules, harder competition

The end of basket-filling is good for shoppers. It is less comfortable for mid-sized foreign brands.

Why? Under the old system, a shopper who came for a Chinese brand often added a small imported item to reach the threshold. A French wine, a Japanese snack, an Australian supplement. That “filler” traffic was real. We saw it every year with our clients. With a direct discount on each item, that effect shrinks. Each product must now win on its own.

Second point: 25 days is long. Budgets do not grow by 25 days. If you spread your ad money evenly, you disappear. Brands that win pick two or three peaks and hit hard.

Third point: the price is now very visible. A direct cut means shoppers compare your “official” price with Douyin, JD and Pinduoduo in seconds. Your price discipline across platforms matters more than your coupon design.

What foreign brands must lock in the next 3 weeks

Here is the checklist I give our clients this week.

1. Register for the official discount now

Participation in the 官方立减 mechanism goes through Tmall’s merchant backend, with deadlines before the pre-sale. Check with your TP or store operator today. If your hero SKUs are not enrolled, they will look more expensive than the competition on day one.

2. Choose your hero SKUs and your real margin

Take 3 to 5 products, not 40. Calculate the discount you can afford. A skincare brand we work with sells a serum at about $56 (400 RMB). A 15% official cut brings it to about $48 (340 RMB). They decided it was fine on the serum, not on the full range. That is the right thinking.

3. Stock in bonded warehouses before October 10

Cross-border orders explode on October 20 at 8 pm. If stock is still at sea, you lose the first 72 hours, which are often the best of the whole event. Check with your logistics partner that stock arrives in Hangzhou, Ningbo or Guangzhou bonded zones in time.

4. Seed content from October 1

Pre-sale shoppers decide on Xiaohongshu and Douyin before they open Tmall. Notes from real users and small KOLs need two weeks to rank. If you start seeding on October 15, you start too late. Our list of best-selling 11.11 categories shows where the competition is hardest.

5. Plan two ad peaks, not a flat budget

We usually concentrate spend on the pre-sale opening (October 15 to 20) and on the final week before November 11. The middle period is for retargeting shoppers who added to cart.

6. Prepare Douyin in parallel

Tmall is not the only game. Douyin runs its own event on similar dates. More and more brands split the budget, as I explained in why brands are moving from Tmall to Douyin. Keep the same price on both, or shoppers will notice.

Who should skip Double 11?

I will say it clearly: not every brand should play. If you opened your store three months ago, with no reviews and no content, a 25-day price war will burn your cash. Build your base first, and use Double 12 or Chinese New Year as your first big test. A small cosmetics brand we advised last year skipped 11.11 and did better at 12.12 with half the budget.

Need help before October 15?

At GMA, we set up Tmall and Tmall Global campaigns every year for foreign brands: SKU selection, pricing, Xiaohongshu seeding, Douyin ads and store operations. If you want a quick check of your Double 11 plan, contact our team in Shanghai.

Your turn: does a simple direct discount help foreign brands stand out, or does it just push everyone into a pure price war? I would like to hear what you see on your side.

China Cross-Border E-commerce Returns: New Tax-Free Rules

China just made it cheaper to take back goods sold abroad through cross-border e-commerce. Most foreign brands will read this headline and think it is about imports into China. It is not. It is mainly about exports from China. But if you manufacture in China, or keep stock there, it matters for you. The facts: […]

Pinduoduo Moves Upmarket: Billion Bet on Its Own Brands

For ten years, foreign brands told me the same thing about Pinduoduo: “cheap platform, not for us.” I understood it. In 2016 PDD was the app of group deals on fruit and paper towels. That picture is now out of date, and the company just put a big number on the table to prove it. […]
