AI Marketing Market in China: Size, Segments and Where Money Goes

Every week in our Shanghai office, a client asks me the same question: “Should we spend on AI marketing in China, or is it hype?” My answer: the money has already moved. The question is whether you move with it.

Here are the numbers, the segments, the players and where I think brands should put their budget in 2026 and 2027.

How big is the AI marketing market in China?

According to iResearch data reported by Jiemian, China’s AI marketing market reached 38.76 billion RMB in Q1 2026, about $5.5 billion, up 68.3% year on year. That is one quarter. Even with no further growth, the full year would pass $20 billion.

The second figure matters more to me. For the first time, LLM-based lead generation and customer acquisition solutions made up more than 60% of the market. AI in China is not a toy for making pretty visuals. Most of the money buys one thing: customers.

Other research points the same way. iiMedia Research’s 2026 AI marketing white paper sizes the GEO market (optimization for AI search answers) at 34.93 billion RMB (about $4.9 billion) in 2025, and notes that nearly 40% of Chinese users now treat AI assistants as a main source of information. Different scopes, different methods, same message: fast growth, and search behavior is changing.

The four segments where the money goes

1. Lead generation and ad targeting (the biggest share)

This is the 60%+ block. Ad platforms now use large models to pick audiences, write variants, set bids and score leads. Advertisers set a goal and a budget, the model does the rest. Sina Finance reports that Tencent’s marketing services revenue grew 20% to 38.2 billion RMB (about $5.4 billion) in Q1 2026, and that its AIM+ automated campaign suite already handled around 30% of advertiser spend.

2. Content creation (AIGC)

Product copy, Xiaohongshu notes, short video scripts, localized visuals. Production cost has fallen hard. A beauty brand we work with went from 20 content pieces a month to more than 100 with the same team. The catch: since September 2025, AI-generated content in China must be labeled. Volume is easy now. Quality and compliance are not.

3. AI customer service

Chatbots on Tmall, JD, WeChat and Douyin stores now answer most pre-sale questions. For a foreign brand, this is the easiest win: 24/7 answers in fluent Chinese, trained on your product catalog, handing over to a human when the buyer is ready.

4. Digital humans in livestreaming

AI hosts run livestream rooms at night and during off-peak hours on Taobao and Douyin. They do not replace a top KOL. They do keep a store “live” 20 hours a day at a fraction of the cost of a human team.

Who are the main players?

  • Ocean Engine (巨量引擎), ByteDance’s ad platform for Douyin and Toutiao. Heavy on automated campaigns and AI video creation.
  • Tencent Ads, covering WeChat, Channels, mini programs and QQ, driven by AIM+.
  • Alimama, Alibaba’s ad arm for Taobao and Tmall, with AI bidding and AI shopping assistants.
  • Baidu, which is moving its search ads toward AI answers, where GEO starts to matter as much as classic SEO.
  • Service providers: iiMedia lists four types, from platform-based to vertical AI search specialists and mid-sized firms.

My reading: the platforms capture most of the value. Their AI tools are built in and cheap to start. Independent tools win only where the platforms stay closed to each other, for example cross-platform content and GEO.

What it means for foreign brands

Your ads are already managed by AI, whether you like it or not. On Ocean Engine or Tencent, the manual campaign is disappearing. What you control now is the input: clean conversion data, strong creative, clear goals. Bad data in, bad targeting out.

Your brand must exist in AI answers. When a Chinese buyer asks DeepSeek, Doubao or Baidu’s AI “best imported baby formula” or “best industrial pump supplier,” your brand appears or it does not. Nobody clicks page two anymore. We cover the search side in Baidu SEM for foreign brands.

B2B gains the most. The 60% lead-gen share is not only consumer brands. Industrial and B2B companies use AI scoring and content to fill their sales pipeline. See our guide to B2B lead generation in China.

Speed now beats size. A mid-sized European brand with a good AI content workflow can test 50 Douyin creatives a week. A big group waiting for headquarters approval tests three. Guess who learns faster. Our Douyin advertising strategies article shows how we set up this test loop.

Where I would put the budget

  1. First: clean tracking and conversion data on each platform. Without it, AI bidding burns money.
  2. Second: an AI-assisted content engine with human editors who know Chinese culture. The machine writes, the human decides.
  3. Third: GEO and Baidu presence, so AI assistants quote your brand.
  4. Fourth: AI customer service on your main store.
  5. Last: digital human livestreams, once your human livestreams work.

At GMA, we run these setups every day for foreign brands, from Douyin AI campaigns to GEO audits. If you want a quick check of where your brand stands in Chinese AI search, contact our team.
