The effect of Internet in police operation against Zhou Kehua

CHINESE police have killed a fugitive armed robber and suspected serial killer dubbed China’s most dangerous man, ending a huge manhunt, state media said.

Zhou Kehua, who is suspected of killing nine people, spent eight years on the run before being shot dead in an alleyway in the southwestern megacity of Chongqing early on Tuesday, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The 42-year-old’s death ends a huge search that began when he reportedly shot and killed a woman outside a bank in Chongqing on Friday morning, wounding another two people, before killing a police officer later that day.

Unlike what most people are thinking, the police operation this time is not only a victory of bullets and bounty. The influence of internet is also carefully employed.

After the police discovered that the criminal was in town, to catch off the guard of the serial murder, the police prepared a lot of pictures and illustration to claim that they have already found the target in Ge Le Mountain and surrounded mountain.

The possible reason is to create some conflicts between him and his companion. The number of money is easy to get from the bank, so this mistake is probably committed on purpose. Now there have been 634,000 results about “Zhou Kehua, 250,000”

This online campaign has influenced almost everybody on the internet.

Like all the commercial online campaigns, this one is also suspected by some people. But all the discussions about the doubtful points are only accessible on some forums instead of portals or official websites.

Not only doubts, you can also find a lot of unconfirmed information on internet. Here again we see the great influence of Sina Weibo. There are more than 600 posts about an unconfirmed piece of information that “Zhou Kehua was once a member of Chinese special troops”. Those posts have been shared and commented tens of thousands of times. No wonder some web marketers will describe weibo as a “warm bed for rumors”.

This online campaign made by Chongqing social security is a total success. It makes misguide the murderer somehow. What’s more important is it let everybody know about the achievement they have made.

To sum up, through this campaign, Chongqing social security has increased their popularity, lead the opinion of the people. And this is also what all the companies dream to have.
